What is the CDIO Academy?
The CDIO Academy is an opportunity for engineering students that are active at CDIO institutions to work on design-implement projects, team up with their peers from engineering programmes around the world across disciplines and cultures and learn from prominent leaders in engineering education. For the CDIO Academy and Innovation Challenge, the focus is primarily on the engineering innovation aspects of the CDIO Concept: Conceiving, Designing, Implementing, and Operating systems in the enterprise, societal and environmental context and the innovation process.
All participants will be assigned to multi-disciplinary, multi-institution teams before the challenge starts.
The challenge takes place in two phases:
- Online preparatory activities to introduce you to your team-mates and allow you to get to know each other.
- The main challenge and activities will be in-person, in Liverpool during the main CDIO conference.
Aerobatic Aircraft Design Challenge
Liverpool’s CDIO challenge will task teams of students to create an aerobatic aircraft to compete in a digital ‘Red Bull Air Race’ around the city of Liverpool. Entrants will design and ‘build’ their aircraft using integrated simulation tools, before testing them in Liverpool’s state-of-the-art HELIFLIGHT-R flight simulator with a professional test pilot.
Each multi-disciplinary team must address a range aircraft performance challenges to complete the urban racecourse in the shortest time possible while minimising race penalties and ensuring the aircraft does not exceed structural limits. Mirroring industrial practice, each team member will have a clearly defined role covering themes of aerodynamics, propulsion, wing structures, flight dynamics and flight control. Operating within technical constraints and a finite development budget, teams must make and justify engineering trade-offs to produce the best possible aircraft. Teams have access to university facilities like wind tunnels, flight simulators and propeller thrust and wing structure testing rigs for prototyping and analysis of their designs.
We invite students from all disciplines of engineering to take part, not just aerospace students.
We'll support you to learn about the important engineering concepts if you are unfamiliar or need a refresher.

How to Apply
To apply for CDIO-Academy, a coordinating contact person from each participating education institution needs to be present at the CDIO Conference. The coordinator will complete the online application form (link below) that requires a list of students, including names, email addresses, study program, and present year of studies.
Only one application per institute should be made with a maximum of 4 students. Depending on how many institutions are interested we may need to reduce the number of students per institute to 2; we want to ensure as many institutes are represented as possible. A maximum of 40 spaces are available, if more than 40 students apply overall, the following selection criteria will be used in the selection of participants:
- A well-balanced representation of regions and countries around the world
- As many engineering disciplines as possible represented
- An as even as possible overall gender balance
- The applications’ quality of argumentation for participation
